This Journey takes us through a unique area perfectly suited to exploration by sea kayak - Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge. During the first half of the summer, this area is visited by a variety of striking sea birds, such as Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Oystercatchers. But this trip is as much about employing your trip planning and boat handling skills, as it is about the sights. Strong currents sweep this section of the coast, and the area can be exposed to significant swell. Though we'll be covering a bit more distance than we do in our regular classes, there will be opportunities to tune up stroke efficiency, navigation, and other topics that will enhance the journey and make you a safer, more self-sufficient paddler in exposed coastal environments.
Participants should have basic rescue skills, and be capable of paddling 15 miles in a day at a consistent 3 knot pace. Bird-nesting limits our options for landings on this trip, so participants should be comfortable staying in their boats for up to 3 hours.
