During this 3-day sea kayak journey, we'll refine skills essential for journeying in an offshore, tidal environement. Departing from Bass Harbor we'll have access to the many islands that stretch out to the south Swan’s Island and Frenchboro. Topics will be customized according to student’s individual needs, including route planning involving tidal currents and weather, cockpit navigation, boat handling in moderate wind and waves, and leadership topics for more advanced participants. With 2-nights of island camping, we'll practice skills to help prepare you for your own overnight kayak adventures as well. (For more complete coverage of trip-planning and preparation, consider joining us for a Practical Navigation course as well, date TBA).
This journey is appropriate for paddlers who are familiar with rescues and basic boat-handling, and will also interest more advanced paddlers looking to gain confidence with more complex tidal and route planning; participants should be capable of paddling 12 miles in a day in 1-2 foot seas, and 10-15 knots of wind. If you are unsure of whether this course is right for you, we'd be happy to discuss the the course with you by phone.
