At the expansive mouth of Penobscot Bay, 6 miles east of Rockland, and 4 miles west of Stonington, the Fox Islands are made up of nearly 50 individual islands, centered around the island communities of North Haven and Vinalhaven. Because of the complexity of getting here, exposure to ocean conditions from the south, and numerous route and camping options, this area is the perfect venue for a more in-depth journey training, over 5 days and 4 nights. On this longer adventure will have time to work on paddling skills in a variety of ocean environments, practice the art and science of navigation, and gain experience making prudent on-water decisions. During 4 nights of island camping we will consider Leave No Trace principles, island cuisine, and ongoing route-planning that considers tides, weather, and human factors.
This journey is appropriate for paddlers who are familiar with rescues and basic boat-handling, and are capable of paddling up to 12 miles in a day in 1-2 foot seas, and 10-15 knots of wind. Those who have not had recent rescue practice should consider contacting us for a Rescues and Bracing refresher in advance of this course.
