“Yikes, that landing looks tricky!”   “Hey, where’d their boat go?”  “Sasha, was that hole there before lunch?”

Todd Johnstone-Wright (Synaptic Sport) and Nate Hanson team up for this two day course, geared towards better understanding the environment, and having more intentional adventures. Our philosophy of preparedness is that you only know what a solution will look like if you have actually practiced it in challenging, realistic conditions.  In this scenario-based course you’ll build and explore your risk-assessment and safety-planning toolkit, so that we can avoid catastrophe whenever possible; and we’ll go make a bunch of mayhem to practice sorting out the messes that the ocean sometimes throws your way. After two days, we hope to have a group of thrill-seeking paddlers who are more prepared to play safely on the ocean, and better manage incidents for themselves and their paddling companions.  

Topics may include dynamic risk assessment, rough-water rescues, difficult landing situations, emergency communications, hypothermia, on-water boat repair, and other issues that leaders and adventure-seekers in Maine are apt to encounter.  

Todd and Nate can accommodate a range of skill levels in this course, from those working on Advanced Sea Leader Training, to those who are just starting to play in rock environments. Paddlers should all have some familiarity with rescues and towing techniques, and be comfortable paddling in 1-2’ waves.  We will be in the water, so dress for immersion.  Watersport helmets and towbelts are required.  Please let us know if you need to borrow either of these items.
