Tidal Planning and Journey - Bass Harbor to the Gotts
The goal of this day is to gain skills and confidence in planning and carrying out a journey in an area with some significant tidal effects. To do this, we'll plan and undertake an excellent journey from Bass Harbor, across the Bass Harbor Head Bar to the Gott Islands, and possibly on to Black and Placentia Islands as well. Participants will be given some optional pre-planning questions to consider before meeting for the course. Prior to launching, we'll use that pre-planning to determine a route that reflects the day's weather and tide, so that we can make use of the environment instead of fighting it. Along the way we'll brush up on some practical navigational techniques as well, and touch on some stroke efficiency as well, to help us cover the miles more easily. While we won't have a lot of time for playing around in the rocks on this journey, there will likely be a couple opportunities along the way for some quick forays into the rocky shorelines on the south and east sides of the Gotts and Black Island, for folks who are interested.
This trip is appropriate for anyone who's comfortable in their boat for 2 hours at a time, and can paddle 10 to 15 miles at a ~3 knot pace.
