Basic navigation and paddling in current are essential skills for kayakers anywhere, but particularly on the Maine coast, with it’s innumerable islands, frequent fog, and strong tides. This one-day course will introduce navigational concepts and tools on land, and then progress to applying those skills from the seat of your kayak. (While there will be a few shore lessons, we’ll spend the majority of this day practicing skills on the water). Navigation topics will include chart reading, compasses and bearings and, in a nutshell, how to find your way on the water.
We’ll also develop skills for planning around the tides and paddling in moving water. In moving water, we’ll work on using ranges to stay on course, crossing simple eddy lines, and reading the water to find the bits that can help you get where you’re going.
